Main Street & Museum Receive Mississippi Hills Grant

Union County received a of total of $17,010 for the 2019 grant cycle from the Mississippi Hills Heritage Area Alliance. New Albany Main Street was awarded $3,200 for their collaborative event with Ripley Main Street, A Tale of Two Faulkners. Billye Jean Stroud, New Albany Main Street Director, and Elizabeth Behm, Ripley Main Street director, have developed activities that will showcase New Albany Native, William Cuthbert Faulkner, and his Ripley resident uncle, Colonel William Clark Falkner, over the 2019 Tallahatchie Riverfest weekend. Walking tours, storytelling workshops and competition, are just a few The Union County Heritage Museum was awarded $13,880 to create a landscape analysis and database of cultural heritage craft makers. Jill Smith, the museum’s director is committed to identifying individuals who could be demonstrators at heritage events and teach their crafts to others to preserve, sustain, and share the skills.


Billye Jean Stroud, Jill Smith, and Tracy Vainisi attended the grant awards program at the DeSoto County Visitors Center in Hernando, Miss. The executive director of the MHHAA Mary Cates Williams, who handed out checks to all of the groups that were present announced, “We are very excited to have another successful grant round and we look forward to working with each of these organizations.”
