Pursuit in Tippah County Near Cotton Plant Detours Traffic, Shots Reportedly Fired

On the morning of New Year’s Eve 2019, a pursuit began between 47-year old Brian Elkins, Mississippi Highway Patrol, and local officers which started in Benton County, entered Tippah County, then Union County, and back into Tippah County. The chase ended in a crash near Cotton Plant.

It was also reported that shots were fired in an attempt to stop the vehicle being pursued and the incident led to a 3-hour traffic detour from Blue Mountain Production to the Union County line in Cotton Plant.

According to Tippah County Coroner Chris McCallister, the preliminary autopsy report concluded that Elkins died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It is currently unknown where the man is from, but the vehicle he was in had a California license plate and he had a Tennessee license.

Investigations of the crash continue.
